CLEARANCE GRANTED: BRAZILIAN PORK UNLOCKED FOR ENTRY INTO MEXICO, NEW SHIPMENTS REMAIN SUSPENDED

Brazilian Pork

The Mexican government has given the green light for the entry of Brazilian pork shipments that were either at sea or held in local ports, according to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). These products had been held since mid-November when a first-instance decision by a Mexican court prohibited the importation of Brazilian pork. The Ministry of Agriculture estimated that around $60 million worth of Brazilian pork was on its way to Mexico at the end of November, awaiting clearance.

In a statement, ABPA mentioned that the first batch of shipments had been cleared, but the judicial measure remains valid for new ones. “At the same time, the entity remains optimistic about the quick reversal of the judicial decision that temporarily suspended pork imports from Brazil to Mexico,” the association said. ABPA estimates that Brazilian pork shipments to Mexico totaled 5,000 tons per month before the interruption.

The chart below shows Brazilian pork exports to Mexico measured in tonnes in the first ten months of 2023. The data is from DataLiner.
